IPL 2021 to be played with 9 teams, mega auction likely: reports, sports news

The Cricket Control Board in India (BCCI) managed to successfully hold the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 in the United Arab Emirates when the lucrative T20 tournament concluded on Tuesday. Now, the BCCI is reportedly looking to IPL 2021 in India with a full mega-auction somewhere early next year.

Multiple reports have suggested that the Indian cricket board has already informed the franchise to start preparing for the mega auction, which could take place in early 2021.

“The BCCI has told us to be ready for an auction in a couple of months. Although it is not official, that they have asked us to be ready means that they will go ahead as planned. Also, with the arrival of a new team, it makes sense to have an auction now instead of putting it off for a year, ”a franchise official told The New Indian Express.

However, it is a big surprise that the board is also looking to include a new franchise for the next edition. The ninth franchise at IPL will be from Ahmedabad and Sardar Patel Stadium (Motera) is likely to be their home stadium.

Generally, in mega auctions, franchises can retain three players with the option to use the Right To Match (RTM) card on two more players. However, there is still no clarity regarding the retention policy for the upcoming mega auctions.

“The retention policy should continue even if a new team comes in because at this stage, it would not be wise to have all the players in the auction pool. Teams will have to commit to the value of the brand that is based on its star players, ”said another franchise official.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Indians defeated the Delhi Capitals by five wickets in Dubai as the team led by Rohit Sharma lifted their fifth IPL trophy.
