CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has insisted that MS Dhoni will perform for Chennai Super Kings in the next edition of the Indian Premier League, to be played in April 2021, possibly in India. Viswanathan also added that it has been a bad year and CSK does not need to change the whole system.
It has been a year for the Chennai Super Kings to forget, as nothing has gone right for them since landing in the United Arab Emirates. Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh withdrew, citing personal reasons, and with a cluster of Covid cases breaking out, it was impossible for them to get the proper amount of practice ahead of the season.
All of that likely influenced the season, with CSK playing without the required intent to kill and MS Dhoni holding back too much, resulting in mediocre hitting performance game after game. That led to the possibility of CSK restructuring its entire squad for next season, with a new group of players taking over, but CEO Kasi Viswanathan said Dhoni will once again be in charge of matters.
“Yes, definitely. I am very confident that Dhoni will lead CSK in 2021. He has won three titles for us in the IPL. This is the first year that we did not qualify for the playoffs. No other team has. A bad year. it doesn’t mean we will have to change everything, “Viswanathan told TOI on Monday.
“We did not play to our potential this season. We lost games that we should have won. That set us back. The withdrawals of Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh, along with the Covid cases in the camp, meant that the balance of the side was upset,” added.
CSK has two games left this season and, although it has already been eliminated from the playoff race, it has the power to disrupt the dynamics of other teams. This was also the first time the South Indian franchise has been out of the playoff race at the IPL, having been successful 10 out of 10 times in the past.
