The 2020 Indian Premier League match between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings on Tuesday in Sharjah saw another rare moment where Mahendra Singh Dhoni showed his emotions on the field. During the Royals hitting, Dhoni appeared to be briefly upset after one of the wrong decisions by the outfield umpire was legitimately changed after a referral to the third umpire. The moment came in the Royals’ 18th inning when CSK pacemaker Deepak Chahar pitched at Tom Curran. Curran played a shot, but missed. CSK players, however, made a big call to get caught and Curran was handed over by referee Shamshuddin.

There did not appear to be any bat involved and it also appeared that the ball had bounced before reaching Dhoni’s hands. However, Curran was not allowed to take the DRS review because Rahul Tewatia used it previously, and he reluctantly started walking back.
However, after consulting with square leg referee Vineet Kulkarni, Shamshuddin understood his error in judgment and referred him to the television referee. Replays showed that neither Curran skirted the ball nor did Dhoni catch it cleanly, as it bounced before putting on the gloves.
The decision was overturned, but Dhoni seemed quite unhappy and got caught up in a lengthy argument with referee Shamshuddin as he sent his decision to the TV referee.
Incidentally, in Jaipur last year, Dhoni had lost his cool to local referee Ulhas Gandhe for a full shot at waist height that was not deemed ballless. In fact, Dhoni violated the code of conduct for players by entering the ground and charging angrily at the referee.
