Rahul Tewatia of the Rajasthan Royals set his luck to 45 to help his team defeat Sunrisers Hyderabad by five wickets in Sunday’s opener.

Previously opting to hit, Manish Pandey hit 54 while captain David Warner scored 48 to guide SRH to 158/4, a goal the Royals chased with a ball to spare while Rahul Tewatia broke 45, not 28 balls.

Tewatia brought back memories of the Sharjah night, but this time it was Rashid Khan who was on the receiving end at 18 when the southpaw hit three consecutive limits.

With 22 needed in two overs, Tewatia lunged at T Natarajan, who lost his length trying to throw the Yorkers, by a four and a six on the short and thin leg that turned the game in favor of the Royals.

However, luck smiled on Tewatia before the penultimate lap when Tewatia went to cut Rashid Khan and ducked under the edge on goalkeeper Jonny Bairstow’s platform. The ball hit the goalkeeper’s pads and hit the wood on the rebound. Now, if Tewatia had slipped out of his crease as the ball drifted toward the stumps, he could have been in trouble. But in a strange turn of events, after momentarily igniting, the sparkling bail fell back into its slot.

Rule book

According to the ICC, Law 29.1.1 is very clear about what constitutes a dismissal. “The gate is lowered if a bond is completely removed from the top of the stumps, or if a stump is pulled out of the ground,” he says.

Zing’s bail failures became a topic of conversation in the 12th season of the Indian Premier League after failing to go down more than once and giving batters a break.
