RR has enjoyed an electric start to their 2020 IPL campaign, winning both of their opening matches in some style. While they beat CSK by 16 runs after recording 216 runs on the board hitting first, Sanju Samson and Rahul Tewatia stole the spotlight as the Jaipur-based franchise chased a record 224 goal against Kings XI Punjab on Sunday.
Tewatia, who was 17-for-23 at one point, had a dream outing against the Punjab franchise, and then threw 53 runs on just 31 balls to perfectly set the platform for a RR win. He and Samson built a 61-run rostrum for the third wicket before Mohammed Shami fired the Kerala batsman. And although Tewatia and Riyan Parag were later fired, the English duo of Jofra Archer and Tom Curran stood their ground to beat KXIP by four wickets.
Samson, who has scored 74 and 85 in the first two games, will continue to play an important role in RR’s batting lineup and, as always, much will be expected of him, as well as captain Steve Smith, who is also off to a start. positive with scores of 69 and 50.
Samson also has the best strike rate (214.86) so far in IPL 2020, after adding 159 runs from the first two games. He also ranks fourth on the list of top runners (159) this season, behind CSK’s Faf du Plessis (173) and the KXIP duo of Mayank Agarwal (221) and KL Rahul (222).
Jos Buttler played his first match with RR this season against KXIP after serving his mandatory quarantine coming from England, and he will be one to be reckoned with despite not impressing in that clash.
The seasoned pacing duo of Archer and Jaydev Unadkat, however, have yet to shoot, and will hope to make an impact on the game.
Meanwhile, KKR is coming off a landslide win over Sunrisers Hyderabad, as Shubman Gill’s 70 hit propelled them to chase 145 with two overs to spare.
KKR boasts of Eoin Morgan and Andre Russell, two dependable hitters who could be a threat to bowlers back in the day. There was even talk of Russell being promoted in the order before the tournament, but the team’s management has so far given no intention of doing so. Russell came out to bat at No. 6 in Game 1 against the Mumbai Indians, while KKR didn’t have to rely on him for the chase against SRH.
While Pat Cummins was wicketless for 49 races in KKR’s contest against MI, he did pick up a wicket against SRH, finishing 1/19. They may be just the beginning stages of the campaign, but Kuldeep Yadav is off to a quiet start, remaining wicketless in both matches.
