Advance: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have dominated the rivalry with Delhi Capitals having won 15 of the 21 meetings against them.
They were beaten in all 3 matches of the previous edition in 2019 and will therefore enter the match in Dubai with a great psychological advantage.
However, DC will be feeling confident after snatching victory from the jaws of defeat in a thrilling Super Over finale against Kings XI a few days ago in Dubai.
CSK had a strange match against RR in Sharjah and although the scorecard separated the two teams by just 16 runs, they were never really in hot pursuit. MS Dhoni’s initial reluctance to go for the goal was unnerving to say the least!
Capitals of Delhi
DC will look forward to a better show from their top 3: Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan and Shimron Hetymer, all fired by single digits against KXIP.
Rishabh Pant will keep the key in the middle order and will still be the difference between a par score of 160 or a winning total of over 180 if he hits first.
Kagiso Rabada was brilliant against KXIP but DC will expect a better performance from Mohit Sharma, who went for 45 in his 4 overs. Ishant Sharma is still recovering from a back spasm and will most likely lose his chance to be in the XI game again.
DC will be relieved that R Ashwin, who suffered a shoulder dislocation in the game against KXIP, is fit to play and, along with Axar Patel, will form a crucial turning partnership in the middle.
Super Kings of Chennai
CSK’s intermission looks a bit weak in the absence of Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu’s hamstring injury. Faf du Plessis has been his most wanted hitter and there will be a lot of pressure on him to deliver once again.
Murali Vijay has looked bad in both outings so far and needs not only a meaningful performance, but a push in the power play as well. Captain Dhoni needs to show more initiative and hit No. 5 or 6.
Lungi Ngidi has been very expensive and could be replaced by line and length specialist Josh Hazlewood. Another concern for MSD would be Ravindra Jadeja’s bowling game; he has received more than 10 in the two games so far.
Head to head:
15 (CSK) – 6 (DC) (21 games)
