Delhi Capitals (DC) coach Ricky Ponting has stated that he has not spoken to captain Shreyas Iyer about why Ravichandran Ashwin was pulled from the attack after he sacked Rohit Sharma in his first over.
He made this point in the post-match press conference after the Delhi capitals’ one-sided defeat to the Mumbai Indians (MI).
Ricky Ponting began by pointing out that the Delhi Capitals were trying to catch up right after the first over, in which Quinton de Kock smashed Daniel Sams all over the park.
“It was mainly our run through our first overs. The first was 15 or 16, so we were back foot almost immediately there.”
The former Australian captain noted that although the capitals of Delhi recovered in the middle, the bowlers did not execute their plans upon death.
“We made our way into the game, the overs from 7 to 14 were in our favor, I think they were only around 120 for 4 at the time so we were expecting a total of 170, but our execution in the last 4- 5 overs was miles from where it needed to be. “
He explained that Hardik Pandya received the ball in his batting areas and claimed that Ishan Kishan has taken the game away from the Delhi capitals in his three meetings against the Mumbai Indians this year.
“We continually feed Hardik Pandya where he wants the ball. Ishan Kishan kept walking away from us and has played well against us in every game we have played against MI so far this season.”
When asked why Ravichandran Ashwin was removed from the attack after firing Rohit Sharma in his first over, Ponting replied that he has not yet had a discussion with Shreyas Iyer about it.
“I’m not sure why exactly he could have come out of the attack. I think Rabada threw the third or the fourth. I haven’t asked the captain the question yet.”
He added that it is easy to point out a mistake later and that the Delhi Capitals team management supports all the decisions made by their captain.
“One thing I know is that hindsight is a wonderful thing in our game. I’m sure the captain had all the right intentions in the decisions he made on the field and we support all those decisions day after day.”
Ricky Ponting on Delhi Capitals hitting effort
Ricky Ponting signed on noting that the next game is just around the corner for the Delhi Capitals and they will have to kick up their socks quickly.
“We have only a couple of days before we have our next challenge. We have to evaluate as a group and dig deep and find ways to improve in a short period of time.”
The Delhi capitals will cross swords with the winners of tonight’s clash between the Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2020 Qualifier 2, hoping to triumph in that match for another chance against the Mumbai Indians in the deciding match for the title. .
