IPL 2020: Explained - IM vs KXIP Super Tie Rules, and why Bumrah couldn't play again

Sunday (October 18) was perhaps the craziest day in the history of the Indian Premier League. The first game of the day was a Super Over, with Kolkata Knight Riders beating Sunrisers Hyderabad. And then Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab did an encore and they went one step further. Not only was the game tied, but the Super Over also ended in a tie, which meant the game went on to another Super Over.

This time, KXIP managed to beat MI to get two vital points on the table.

So here is an explanation and summary of what happened.

Super Over 1:

Jasprit Bumrah kept KXIP at 5 for 2, ruling out both Nicholas Pooran and KL Rahul in the finale.

Mohammed Shami pitched the Super Over for KXIP, and MI had just 5 runs, with Quinton de Kock on the last ball.

Thus, the game went to another Super Over.

Now, this is where the ‘TIED SUPER OVER’ rule comes into play.

The most crucial part of the IPL match playing conditions for a Tied Super Over is:

“21. Any batter fired in any previous Super Over will not be eligible to bat in the next Super Over.

“22. Any player who pitched in the previous Super Over will not be eligible to play in the later Super Over.

“23. In all other ways, the procedure for a subsequent Super Over will be the same as for the initial Super Over.”

This meant: Rahul, Pooran and Quinton de Kock (who were fired) weren’t eligible to hit. Bumrah and Shami, who pitched the two Super Overs, were ineligible to bowl.

Kieron Pollard was listed to hit in the first Super Over, and he was also eligible to hit in the second as he was not fired.

Thus, MI hit, with Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard coming out. KXIP gave the ball to Chris Jordan.

Jordan held IM at 11-1, with Hardik Pandya exhausted. Mayank Agarwal made an incredible save on the last ball to save 4 runs, which ended crucially.

KXIP hit Chris Gayle and Agarwal, who did the job with ease.
