IPL 2020: Devdutt Padikkal is second uncapped Indian to score 400 runs and more in debut season – cricket

The 2020 Indian Premier League is about discovering new talent. Over the years, various players started young to become the next superstars of Indian cricket, such as Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah. This season, there have been several superstars like T Natarajan, Ravi Bishnoi, and Riyan Parag.

However, the only batsman who has been far above the rest has been Devdutt Padikkal of Royal Challengers Bangalore. In fact, with 417 runs in 12 games, the 20-year-old Padikkal is only the second no-limits player in IPL history to rack up more than 400 runs in his debut season. Before him, only Shreyas Iyer did, scoring 439 runs for the Delhi Capitals (then Daredevils) in 2015. Overall, Padikkal is the eighth Indian player to score 400 runs in his first IPL season.

Padikkal has so far served three half centuries in the IPL. He started half a century down in his first match of the season against Sunrisers Hyderabad, before fighting for fifty consecutive Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals scoring 54 and 63 respectively. He made starts multiple times by opening batting for RCB alongside Finch, as would be reflected by scores of 33, 32, 35.

After going a few games without a good score, Padikkal returned to his scoring, hitting 74 of 45 balls against the Mumbai Indians. He hit 12 fours and a six for his team’s high score before heading out to Bumrah. His hit, however, was in vain as MI secured a five-wicket win on the back of an undefeated 79 from Suryakumar Yadav.
