IPL 2020, DC vs KXIP: Preity Zinta, Virender Sehwag Fume on Referee’s Controversial “Short Term” Call

The 2020 DC vs KXIP IPL clash at Dubai International Cricket Stadium had all the thrills and spills of a T20 game, all rolled into one, and also had some controversy, threatening to spill over. Delhi Capitals beat Kings XI Punjab in a Super Over to get their 2020 IPL campaign off to a winning start, but they did it with the skin of teeth. Punjab threw the match despite having to score just one run from the last 3 balls. But that scenario wouldn’t even have come to fruition if the referee hadn’t called Chris Jordan for a short period.

Kings XI Punjab co-owner and Bollywood actor Preity was not in the least amused by the referee’s controversial call and made his feelings known on Twitter.

Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag also criticized the referee for his decision, saying sarcastically that he should have received the Man of the Match award.

With Mayank Agarwal doing very well, KXIP was left needing 21 of the last 10 balls when England’s Chris Jordan was called for a short run by square-legged referee Nitin Menon at the front end.

An angle from the television reruns showed that Jordan had in fact dragged his bat over the line, but despite that, Menon’s original decision to dock a race in Punjab was not overturned.

That meant that at the end of the finale, Kings XI Punjab needed 13 runs of the final six balls and not 12. Mayank Agarwal broke 12 runs of the first three balls to even the scores, but the match would have ended with Punjab winning with the three balls. more than enough if the “short term” decision had not been made.

In the end, Marcus Stoinis pulled a rabbit out of the hat, tossing a dotted ball and following it across the grounds of Agarwal and Chris Jordan to send the match into a Super Over.

Delhi Capitals won the match in the Super Over at a canter after Punjab managed to score just two runs.
