Bangalore: Taiwan-based Wistron Corporation has said it had suffered a loss of value ₹437.40 million rupees in violence at its premises unleashed by a section of workers over wage issues at its plant in Karnataka’s Kolar district.
A large number of employees allegedly carried out arson, looting and violence at Wistron’s Narasapura manufacturing plant over some wage-related problems on Saturday, police said.
They damaged the building, damaged vehicles, set them on fire, damaged expensive equipment, including machines and computers.
In his complaint at the Vemagal police station, the company executive TD Prashanth has stated that office equipment, mobile phones, production machinery and related equipment are worth ₹Rs 412.5 million were lost.
Infrastructure value ₹10 crore, ₹60 lakh worth of cars and golf carts, smartphones and other gadgets ₹1.5 million rupees are among those that were damaged, stolen or lost.
It claimed in its complaint that 5,000 contract workers and around 2,000 unknown culprits carried out the vandalism at the factory premises.
So far, the police have arrested 149 people and detained a few more.
Meanwhile, Wistron India Managing Director Sudipto Gupta said in a statement that the company was in a state of deep shock over the events at its Narasapura facility.
“We follow the law and we are supporting the authorities with their investigation. The safety and well-being of our team members is always our highest priority,” Gupta said in a statement to the media.
The Karnataka government not only condemned the incident, but also ensured safety and strict measures were taken against those involved in the fire and violence.
Political parties in Karnataka on Sunday sought a comprehensive investigation into the violence at the Wistron manufacturing plant, as they raised concerns about its possible impact on the investment-friendly state’s image.
