BENGALURU: The Indian Space Research Organization (Isro) on Thursday released the initial data from Chandrayaan-2, India’s second Moon mission, which launched on July 22, 2019.
The Orbiter, which was injected into a lunar orbit on September 2, 2019, carries eight experiments / payloads, all of which have performed well and sent the received data.
Isro said the data received suggests excellent ability to deliver on pre-launch promises.
“Publicly available data archived at the India Space Science Data Center (ISSDC) in Byalalu, near Bengaluru, is prepared in the standard planetary data system 4 (PDS4) format followed globally for public release. Isro Science Data Archive (ISDA) currently contains data sets acquired by Chandrayaan-2 from September 2019 to February 2020 from seven instruments. The IIRS payload data sets will be added to this shortly, ”Isro said.
The set released Thursday is core data, what Isro calls Level 0 and Level 1 data sets, prepared using the PDS4 standards. The ISSDC is Isro’s nodal archiving center for planetary data for planetary missions.
“The Chandrayaan-2 data, as with all others, must be scientifically and technically peer reviewed before being accepted as PDS files and declared ready for sharing with the global scientific community and the general public. This activity has been completed and therefore the first mission dataset has now been published for wider public use, ”added Isro.
In the period since launch, payload crews tuned onboard systems for optimal instrument configurations, obtained essential in-flight calibration data, and revised or updated software and data processing steps.
