An Indian citizen and a man of Indian origin from Malaysia have been charged by federal prosecutors with voting illegally in the 2016 US presidential election by falsely claiming US citizenship.

Baijoo Pottakulath Thomas, 58, and 11 other foreign nationals were indicted in the United States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina last month on misdemeanor charges for illegally casting votes in the presidential election. of 2016.

Non-citizens are not eligible to register to vote or to vote in federal elections under US law.

Another man of Indian origin, Roob Kaur Atar-Singh, 57, of Malaysia, was among seven foreigners facing federal charges in North Carolina for voting illegally in the 2016 federal elections.

ICE said these charges are the latest indictments resulting from a years-long federal criminal investigation being conducted by federal agencies.

Atar-Singh was among those indicted by a federal grand jury for falsely claiming U.S. citizenship or making false statements on voter registration applications, and for the misdemeanors of illegally casting votes in the 2016 presidential election.
