IPL 2020 Final, MI vs DC: Rohit Sharma with the Indian Premier League trophy© BCCI / IPL
Former India starter and Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir feels it was time for Rohit Sharma to take over the India captaincy with the white ball, or at least in the T20I format. Rohit led the Mumbai Indians (MI) to victory in the 2020 Indian Premier League (IPL) final against Delhi Capitals, which was also the fifth record Mumbai IPL title. Rohit played a 68-run hit, while MI successfully chased a 157 goal at Dubai International Stadium. The 2011 World Cup winner Gambhir feels that India will lose if that decision is not made, after Rohit added a sixth IPL title to his trophy cabinet. He has won five times with MI and once in 2009 with Deccan Chargers.
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Gambhir said: “If Rohit Sharma does not become the captain of India, it is his loss, not Rohit’s. Yes, a captain is only as good as his team and I fully agree with that, but what? what are the benchmarks to judge? A captain on who’s good and who’s not? The benchmarks and benchmark should be the same. Rohit has led his team to five IPL titles. “
Virat Kohli is the current captain of India in all three formats. Kohli is also a skipper for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), but never won the IPL. They crashed in the Eliminator this season.
Gambhir also compared Rohit to former India captain MS Dhoni. He said that Dhoni is the most successful captain in India, due to his international trophies and three IPL titles. He said that parameter should also be used to judge the MI captain.

The cricketer-turned-politician also feels that a divided captaincy is feasible for India. “They can also consider the divided captaincy. No one is poor. Rohit has shown in white ball cricket how big the difference is between his captaincy and Virat’s. One player had led his team to five titles, the other has yet to won”. I’m not saying this because Kohli is a bad captain.
“But they have received the same platform that Rohit has, so you have to judge them both by the same parameters. They have both been captains in the IPL for the same time. I feel like Rohit stands out as a leader,” he said. Gambhir.
