India recorded a drop in its daily coronavirus (Covid-19) count on Monday after 38,772 new cases registered in the last 24 hours, according to the update from the Union Ministry of Health. With this, the total number of cases has risen to 9,431,691 which includes 446,952 active cases and almost 8.9 million recoveries.
The country also recorded 443 new deaths due to the infection, bringing the death toll to 137,139.
According to the Ministry of Health, the overall recovery rate is close to 94 percent.
The ministry said on Monday that India continues to have one of the lowest deaths per million people globally, adding that targeted measures to ensure a low and manageable death rate have resulted in daily death figures of less than 500.

Eight states – Delhi, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Haryana, Punjab, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan – contributed nearly 71% of the death toll on Sunday. Maharashtra led the count with 89 deaths, followed by Delhi (68) and West Bengal (54), the Health Ministry said.
Maharashtra added 5,544 coronavirus cases on Sunday, bringing the tally to more than 1.8 million. This is the second day in a row that daily cases have been below 6,000. The state government has expanded its daily Covid-19 tests with 82,224 tests conducted as of Saturday. Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope had said that district authorities had been instructed to carry out aggressive tests in an attempt to contain the spread of the disease.

On the other hand, coronavirus cases in Delhi continued to fall, but the total deaths crossed the 9,000 mark on Sunday after 68 deaths were reported. Daily cases remained below 5,000 for the second time in a row and the positivity rate fell further to 7.64%. Health Minister Satyendar Jain had said on Saturday that there is enough infrastructure and equipment to vaccinate the entire population of national capitals once a vaccine is available.
“There is no need to worry about vaccine storage. We have a large number of health care facilities, such as mohalla clinics, polyethylene clinics and hospitals, etc., where a Covid-19 vaccine can be given to people, ”he added, according to the PTI news agency.
