India’s Covid-19 Count Nears 5.9 Million; 86,052 new cases registered in the last 24 hours


India recorded 86,052 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total count to close to 5.9 million. Active cases have risen to 9,70,116, while more than 4.75 million have been recovered so far.

During the last six days, the number of recoveries recorded per day in the country has exceeded the number of new cases. But in the last 24 hours, the number of recoveries stood at 81,177.

The Health Ministry said on Friday that 75 percent of the new coronavirus cases in the country are concentrated in 10 states and Union Territories (UT), making 74 percent of the new recoveries.

The ministry also noted that a minimum of 14 states demonstrated a better response to Covid-19 based on higher tests per million inhabitants and the corresponding positivity rate lower than the national average.

A total of 68,928,440 samples have been tested for Covid-19 so far, of which nearly 1.5 million samples were tested on Thursday, according to data released by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR).

Meanwhile, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Kerala, Delhi are some of the states that continue to be hit hardest by the pandemic. Delhi is on top of the second wave of Covid-19 and Prime Minister Arvind Kejriwal said its intensity will be less in the coming days.
