Kerala on Saturday reported the peak number of new coronavirus cases in the country, even higher than Maharashtra. It is the first time since March that a state has reported more cases than Maharashtra in one day.

Kerala detected 11,755 new cases on Saturday, its highest level to date, while the count in Maharashtra fell to an unusually low number of 11,416. Kerala has been in the midst of its worst increase in coronavirus cases, and the state government has said it expected daily numbers to be even higher, with the decline likely to start next month. The state’s health minister, KK Shailaja, had told The Indian Express that the daily figures could go as high as 20,000, although the effort was to contain them within 15,000 per day.

The United States has detected more than 52,000 new cases in the past two days, its highest level since mid-August. Globally, around 10 lakh of cases have been added in the last three days alone, just over twenty percent of which has been contributed by India.
