NEW DELHI: The government said Monday it will organize special flights to bring stranded Indian nationals back abroad, but the facility will be offered only as a fee.
“Unscheduled commercial flights would be arranged for air travel. The journey would begin gradually starting May 7. This facility would be available for a fee,” the government said in a statement.
This comes amid reports that the government is charging migrant workers confined to their homes for their train trips, while having the cost of evacuating stranded Indians abroad.
North Carolina leader Omar Abdullah also criticized the government for allegedly accusing the migrants while evacuating the stranded Indians abroad for free.
“If you are trapped abroad during this Covid crisis, this government will take you back for free, but if you are a migrant worker stranded in another state, be prepared to pay the cost of the trip (with the cost of social distancing added Where “PM Do you mind going? “Abdullah tweeted.
However, the government said today that it never spoke of charging migrant workers, adding that the railways have subsidized 85 percent of the ticket fare and the remaining 15% comes from the states.
