Indian railways to dump sleeper cars on high-speed trains. See details

Indian railways have decided to upgrade from non-air-conditioned (AC) bed wagons to AC for high-speed trains.

With the aim of saving travel time, it is already improving the tracks in the Golden Quadrilateral and the Diagonals, connecting the four metropolitan cities, to serve the trains that circulate at a speed of 130 km to 160 km / hour (kmph).

Currently, only the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah sections of the Golden Quadrilateral are being prepared.

According to an official statement from the Indian Railways, air-conditioning wagons are essentially a technical necessity for trains running at a speed of 130/160 km / h. “The speed potential of some of the corridors has already been improved to 130 km / h. Wind and weather factors require that only certain types of coaches run faster. Therefore, not all coaches other than air conditioning will be upgraded for high speed trains. “

He added that a prototype of such an AC coach is being built at the Rail Coach Factory and should be ready in a few weeks. “An 83-seater coach is currently being designed. It is planned to have 100 coaches this year and 200 next year. The coaches will be evaluated, on the basis of which further progress will be made.”

Railways further said that it will be ensured that while the price of tickets for the modified air-conditioned trains remains very affordable, comfort and convenience multiply increase.

Meanwhile, non-air-conditioned coaches will continue on trains running at 110 km / h, Indian Railways further said.
