Indian Railways today suspended all passenger trains except for Shramik special services and 30 special trains until further notice. The railways canceled all tickets reserved for travel on or before June 30, the rail ministry said. All tickets reserved for these canceled trains will be fully refunded, added the national carrier.
The railroads had suspended passenger train services since March 22 to mitigate the spread of the virus in the country.
Indian Railways “gradually” resumed passenger train services this week by introducing 30 special trains connecting Delhi and other major cities in India. These trains will run from New Delhi Station to Dibrugarh, Agartala, Howrah, Patna, Bilaspur, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Secunderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Madgaon, Central Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Jammu Tawi.
These trains only have wagons with air conditioning. The rates will be similar to the Rajdhani Express rates, said a railway ministry official.
Passengers purchased more than 45,000 tickets on Monday when Indian Railways began taking reservations for the special trains. All tickets for the special train Mumbai Central-New Delhi until May 18 were sold out in a few minutes.
The railways issued a schedule for the trains that will run between May 12 and 20. Passengers must book tickets for special trains through Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation or the IRCTC website or mobile app. Ticket reservation desks at railway stations will remain closed in the wake of the new coronavirus pandemic. Tatkal accommodation or premium tatkal accommodation will not be provided.
Only passengers with confirmed valid tickets will be able to enter the railway stations. Platform tickets will not be issued. All travelers must wear a face mask and undergo extensive testing at the stations. Passengers must install the Aarogya Setu app to board trains.
Passengers will go through a review before boarding the train. You must arrive at the station at least 90 minutes before your scheduled trip to follow all of these new rules. Only asymptomatic people or those who do not show choroanvirus symptoms will be able to travel.
Starting this month, Indian Railways organized special trains for migrant workers stranded in various states due to the coronavirus blockade. The carrier has operated over 600 special Shramik trains so far to transport migrant workers.
