A good half century of young Rurutaj Gaikwad saw Chennai Super Kings comfortably beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 8 wickets in match 44 of the 2020 Indian Premier League (IPL). Gaikwad scored his first half century of IPL and received wide support from Ambati Rayudu and Faf du Plessis as CSK chased the 146-run goal with eight balls to spare. After two ducks in his three appearances this season, and just 5 runs in the other game, Gaikwad was under pressure to act, and he delivered, hitting and scoring 65 unbeaten on 51 balls.
After Faf du Plessis (25) helped Gaikwad get CSK off to a good start, Ambati Rayudu played a quick hit of 39. Yuzvendra Chahal pitched Rayudu to end a 67-run partnership.
MS Dhoni promoted himself to No. 4 and played a 19-run supporting hit.
Gaikwad ended up hitting Chris Morris by a limit and a six on the penultimate substitution to seal CSK’s victory.
RCB captain Virat Kohli won the toss and chose to bat.
Despite getting off to a good start, they lost both of their starters in Powerplay. Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers then added 82 runs for the third wicket, before the South African pinned Deepak Chahar’s bowling alley for 39 of 36.
Virat Kohli then reached his 39th IPL half a century before being fired by Sam Curran, who was the CSK bowlers’ choice with three wickets.
Moeen Ali and Chris Morris also fell cheaply as RCB failed to post a grand total.
Promoted
Chennai Super Kings moved above the Rajasthan Royals in the table, and the team led by Steve Smith faced the Mumbai Indians later on Sunday.
