The 2020 IPL final started off with a bang as Mumbai Indians pacemaker Trent Boult knocked out Delhi Capitals’ Marcus Stoinis on the first ball of the match. It was a dream start for the defending champs, as the New Zealander started the process with absolute awe. The ball seemed to cross with the angle, but it was cut a bit after throwing, squaring off the Australian all-rounder, who could only handle the ball to goalkeeper Quinton de Kock. In the process, Boult became the first bowler to take a wicket on the first ball of an IPL final.
It was the worst possible start for Shreyas Iyer and his team after he won the draw and chose to hit at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.
Things went from bad to worse for the Delhi Capitals when Boult hit once more, this time in the third to eliminate Ajinkya Rahane by 2. It was an unfortunate way out for the veteran hitter when he went down one leg, with De Kock. one more time without making mistakes.
This left Delhi Capitals reeling at 16 for two in 2.4 overs. Delhi would have hoped their top scorer, Shikhar Dhawan, would rescue them with another excellent shot, but Jayant Yadav had other ideas.
Promoted
Brought in as a replacement for Rahul Chahar, a man who has taken 15 wickets this season, Jayant Yadav struck with his third ball, casting Dhawan, who could only collect 15 of 13 balls this time.
In the draw, Rohit Sharma said it was a “tactical” move to include Jayant Yadav in the starting eleven, with Delhi having plenty of lefties on the squad.
