With less than a week left until the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) begins, there is concern from within the cricket fraternity over the coronavirus situation at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The stadium floor staff tested positive for COVID-19 and there is a genuine concern that they may have interacted with other plant staff. Replacing only those who have tested positive for Covid may not be enough and the only way to resolve the situation is to bank all members of the ground staff, are the sentiments picked up by NDTV in a conversation with the cricket operations officers.

The Wankhede Stadium is scheduled to host 10 games at IPL 2021.

The first match at Wankhede will be on April 10, and last year’s finalists, Delhi Capitals, will face three-time champion Chennai Super Kings.

IPL 2021 kicks off on April 9, with defending champions Mumbai Indians taking on the Royal Challengers Bangalore, led by Virat Kohli, in Chennai.

The IPL returns to India this year after moving to the United Arab Emirates for the 2020 season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 2020 IPL was held in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi as the Mumbai Indians marched to a record fifth title.

Promoted

This year’s IPL has been scheduled in six cities with the coronavirus pandemic in mind. The tournament will be played in Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Delhi and Ahmedabad.

All games will take place in neutral venues, ensuring that neither team gains home advantage.
