Dr. Nair passed away after a prolonged illness with COVID-19, Station View Medical Center said.
London:
An “outstanding” doctor of Indian origin died in northeast England after a long battle with the deadly coronavirus.
Dr. Poornima Nair, a 55-year-old Keralite from Delhi, worked at Station View Medical Center in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, England.
He died at North Tees Hospital University Hospital in Stockton-on-Tees after a long battle with COVID-19.
Dr. Nair is believed to be the tenth general practitioner (GP) to die on the front line of the UK medical community fighting coronavirus. The highly contagious infection has claimed the lives of more than 32,000 people in the country.
“The practice regrets announcing to our patients the death of our dear colleague and friend Dr. Poornima Nair,” the medical center said in a message.
“Dr. Nair passed away after a prolonged illness of COVID-19, which she fought against with her great strength of character. We are all devastated and upset by this tragic news and hope that you will join us in our thoughts and prayers,” said.
Tributes to the doctor have been received on social media from friends, colleagues and others known to the general practitioner (GP).
She had been on fan support for a few days before succumbing to the disease this week.
“Dr. Nair was a well-known and extremely valuable member of our community, who served as a doctor at Station View Medical Center. Everyone who knew her will miss her very much, and my thoughts and prayers go out to her friends, family, and colleagues at this sad time, “Bishop Auckland local MP Dehenna Davison said in a Facebook post.
One of Dr. Nair’s many patients thanked him for saving his mother’s life.
She wrote: “Rest in peace, Dr. Nair. Absolutely exceptional doctor. I saved my mother’s life 10 years ago, no doubt, after an undiagnosed, life-threatening illness.
“Our entire family will always thank you for making sure that my mother has seen the rest of her life. I am very sad that yours has been interrupted. Sending all our love to your family and co-workers who will no doubt already will be missed. “
A former colleague added, “It is very sad to hear such sad news. I worked alongside Dr. Nair for more than seven years at Station View.
“This is devastating news. My thoughts go out to all of his family, friends, and colleagues.”
