The Indian delegate at the UN General Assembly meeting in New York walked out of the room as the pre-recorded statement from Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was heard on Friday.
The delegate, a junior diplomat named Mijito Vinito from the Indian Foreign Service group of 2010, gathered up his papers and left the room as Khan’s speech played on a large overhead screen.
Khan raised the Kashmir issue, as he has done in recent speeches to multilateral bodies, and criticized the Indian government on various issues.
After Khan’s speech, TS Tirumurti, India’s permanent representative to the UN, tweeted that the country would use the “right of reply” facility to respond to the Pakistani prime minister’s speech.
“Statement by the Prime Minister of Pakistan, a new diplomatic minimum – at the 75th UN General Assembly. Another litany of vicious lies, personal attacks, war and the obfuscation of Pakistan’s persecution of its own minorities and its cross-border terrorism. Wait for an adequate right of reply, ”Tirumurti said in his tweet.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address the UN General Assembly via a video statement on Saturday.
