UK Coronavirus - 'Almost died': UK-born COVID-19 survivor shares her story

UK cases COVID-19: Sales executive Ria Lakhani is relieved that she was able to fight the virus

London:

“I almost died,” recalls Ria Lakhani, of Indian descent, who still struggles to breathe normally, days after surviving a severe case of coronavirus that has killed more than 7,000 people in the UK.

“It used to (breathe) be such a natural action, but now I have to remember how to inhale and exhale,” the BBC said from his home in northwest London.

In self-isolation, she still cannot hug her husband or see her parents and siblings. He still wakes up at night struggling to breathe.

Sales executive Ms. Lakhani began showing symptoms of COVID-19 while in the hospital, where she was admitted for an operation.

Seven years ago, she was diagnosed with a rare condition that makes swallowing difficult. The surgery was designed to help her manage this esophageal disease, called achalasia, according to the report.
Although her admission to the hospital was supposed to be routine, the situation soon became serious. She began to struggle with her breathing and then developed a temperature.

While everyone expected it to be just a side effect of their surgery, a COVID-19 swab test was taken as a precaution. But to everyone’s surprise, it was positive for the coronavirus.

Soon her room was cordoned off and the rest of the room was evacuated.

As her condition deteriorated, she required more oxygen. She was then transferred to one of London’s main COVID-19 treatment centers.

“Things went from bad to worse: breathing became as difficult as climbing a mountain,” he wrote on Facebook.

“I almost died,” he says, speaking from his home to the BBC.

“I’m barely getting out of there. There was a time when I really started writing difficult messages to my family. I almost died now I’m alive. How can life go back to normal after that?”

Ms. Lakhani is still unclear if she developed pneumonia, but says that even now, from her recovery bed at her home in Harrow, she can hear a “cracking” in her lungs. “

According to the World Health Organization, most people (about 80 percent) recover from the disease without the need for special treatment. About 1 in 6 people who get COVID-19 becomes seriously ill and develops difficulty breathing.

Ms. Lakhani said that her recovery has been slow. In the hospital, he was barely able to move at first and was given morphine over oxygen due to pain.

She praised the medical staff who treated her. They are “true heroes,” he said.

“It was the little wins and things like the nurses that made sure Iris had a steady supply of hot tea and an extra piece of sneaky tart that made me smile.”

At home, she has to keep her distance from her husband and continues to be plagued by coughing fits.

But she is relieved that she was able to fight the virus, especially considering how many people have died.

The UK death toll in the coronavirus pandemic continues to rise and reached 7,097 on Wednesday, a record increase of 938 in one day. The government has urged the public to continue to follow strict social distancing rules before a decision can be made to review the measures.

The UK also has more than 55,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, which puts enormous pressure on the country’s medical system.

“I cannot explain the moment I left the hospital, I will never take anything for granted again,” he added.
