Washington:
Indian Americans, with their hard work and entrepreneurial spirit, have fueled America’s economic growth and helped forge cultural dynamism in the country, Democratic presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden said Tuesday.
Addressing a national virtual fundraiser hosted by American Indians, Biden assured community members and mega donors that, as president, he would address their concerns regarding the H-1B visa and the legal immigrants that attract the best and brightest to the USA
Think about what this community has done for the country, he said.
The entrepreneurs who run businesses across the country and around the world, the innovators who lay the foundations of Silicon Valley and lead some of the world’s most influential companies come from the community, the former vice president said.
“You have helped forge an economic and cultural dynamism in this country. That is a continuation of who we are, we are a nation of immigrants,” Biden said.
Attacking President Donald Trump, he said that all harmful actions on H-1B, racial injustice or the climate crisis are a common threat. “This president makes things worse, not better,” added Biden.
It makes parents wonder if their children will have the kind of future they dreamed of when they got here, he said.
“As President, I promise that I will harness the best, not the worst, to beat this pandemic and rebuild the economy, help our children get a good education and make sure that health care is a right and not a privilege, and build an immigration system that drives our economy and reflects our values, “said Biden.
“We don’t talk enough about how the American Indian community has fueled our economic growth,” the former vice president said in his speech to the virtual fundraiser, which according to his spokesman Remi Yamamoto was attended by 268 people.
Grateful for the cultural, social and family values of Native Americans, Biden said that is why he values the American Indian diaspora so highly.
Seema Sadanandan, the campaign’s senior policy advisor, opened the fundraiser and asked Dr. Vivek Murthy, a former surgeon general, to begin by talking about his relationship with Biden. Family was the main topic of conversation with some references to Indian food.
“Joe Biden is the type of person I would love to take home for dinner with my mom and dad,” Dr. Murthy said in his opening remarks, adding that some homemade masala dosa would be served.
“It’s authentic. It’s real. And he says what he thinks and that’s something I really love about him. He says what he has in mind. It’s honest and true,” she said.
Biden, Dr. Murthy said, is a man who generally lives up to his values and those values are reliably centered on generosity and community. “He is who he is,” Dr. Murthy said.
In a statement, Ajay Jain Bhutoria, a member of the American Asian Pacific Islands Leadership Council and a member of the National Finance Committee for Biden’s campaign, said the former vice president will bring hope, unity, change and healing to the country.
“He will restore the soul of America and its glorious position on the world stage. It will be the best friend of India and American Indians.”
It will streamline H1Bs, eliminate green card delays, sign new trade agreements, implement climate change agreements, protect us against hate crimes, protect our places of worship, and ensure South Asians are well represented in your administration. ” Bhutoria said.
