Earlier on day 3: Ravichandran Ashwin’s scintillating century and early grounds helped India dominate the third day of Test 2 against England after setting a 482 goal at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Monday.
Ashwin played a 106-run hit before the hosts were eliminated by 286 in the final session of the day and set a goal of 482 runs against the visitors to take a 2-0 lead in the four-game series. On the third day, England’s score was 53/3 with captain Joe Root and Dan Lawrence still undefeated in two and 19 races, respectively. The visitors still need 429 runs to win the game.
Axar Patel bagged two scalps while Ashwin secured a wicket in the second inning.
Starters Dom Sibley (3) and Rory Burns (25) did not provide a solid position for the visitors and were chosen by Patel and Ashwin respectively.
After losing the first few matches early on, England sent Jack Leach as a night watchman, but that move didn’t work for the visitors either. Resuming the third day from 54/1, India got off to the worst possible start as the hosts lost both Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara in the first 15 minutes. While Pujara lost his grip on his bat and was unable to connect it in time, Rohit was stumped by Leach’s ball thanks to a quick glove work from Foakes.
