India captain Virat Kohli will be on the verge of achieving a major milestone when he comes out to bat in the third ODI against Australia on Wednesday in Canberra. The Indian team has already lost the series to Australia led by Aaron Finch taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. Kohli played a brilliant 89-run inning in the second ODI during India’s 390-run chase. But a big catch by Moisés Henriques ended his stay when India lost the game by 51 runs.

But the visitors will have a chance to score a consolation win and avoid the clean sweep in the third ODI in Canberra. In the match, Kohli will have a chance to surpass Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar to become the fastest player to reach the 12,000-run mark in the ODI.
Kohli is just 23 races away from hitting the 12,000-race ODI mark. If he manages to do so, he would hit the mark on his ODI 251 and 242 innings. By comparison, it took Tendulkar 309 games and 300 innings to hit the mark.
Overall, Kohli will be the sixth player on the list, only after Australian Ricky Ponting, Sri Lankan Kumar Sangakkara, Sri Lanka Sanath Jayasuriya and Sri Lankan Mahela Jayawardene.
Kohli will also be close to matching Sachin’s record of the most hundreds of ODIs by an Indian player against Australia. If Kohli wins a ton, it will be his ninth ODI hundred against the Australians.
