India lost the opening test by eight wickets, falling to its lowest test score of 36 during the debacle.
“India will be looking to make 2 changes. First, maybe KL Rahul should replace Prithvi Shaw as starter. At 5 or 6, Shubman Gill should come in. His form has been good. Things may change if we start well.” Gavaskar told the YouTube channel ‘Sports Tak’ about possible lineup changes.
He warned that if India can’t stay positive, a 0-4 beating could be on the cards.
“India has to believe that they can come back in the rest of the Test series. If India doesn’t find the positivity, then the loss of the 4-0 series can happen. But if they have positivity, why not? Gavaskar said, sounding hopeful.
“India should start the Melbourne Test well, they need to hit the ground with a lot of positivity. Australia’s weak point is their batting,” he said.
Gavaskar feels that the anger among the fans after 36 with everything in the first round is natural.
“It’s natural for there to be anger after such a performance. But in cricket, anything can happen. Look at how the scene was yesterday and what happened today.”
Gavaskar also regretted the missed catches that also reduced the lead to just 53.
“If we had kept our catches well and had good locations in the field, there would have been no problem. Tim paine and Marnus Labuschagne would have left early.
“We could have gotten a 120-run lead. Australia took the lead in Testing because of those missed catches, they reduced the lead to 50 runs,” added Gavaskar.
