India to launch its own app store to compete with Google and Apple

India plans to launch its own app store that will act as an alternative to the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. This movement comes to boost the country’s self-sufficiency.

The current Modi government could attempt to increase its Mobile Seva app store as reported by local news agencies. An ETNow report quoted the government as stating that “Android has a 97% market share in India. Therefore, we should step in and support Indian startups. “Furthermore, the government is also considering making the app store mandatory for Android phones to arrive with this app pre-installed.

Notably, the news also came after numerous tech entrepreneurs came together to petition the government for support regarding a global Indian digital app ecosystem to rival big tech giants like Google and Apple. At a meeting earlier this week, ways to establish a large-scale platform hosting local applications to break the monopoly in today’s market were also discussed.

This group includes several founders, such as Paytm’s Vijay Shekhar Sharma, Policybazaar’s Yashish Dahiya, and Matrimony.com’s Murugavel Janakiraman, which are some of the leading online platforms in the country. They will also look to the country’s banking regulator, including the Finance Ministry, to seek compensation for Google’s recent move that aims to increase the commission for purchases made on its app store.

Murugavel Janakiraman stated that “if India has network neutrality, why can’t we have application neutrality? A government-supervised body can ensure neutrality, fairness, and openness of apps. ”While other notable figures also cited government support to help grow local brands and startups. How they respond remains to be seen. Apple and Google to this news.
