India tests anti-ship version of BrahMos, one week after testing ground attack version: report


Continuing with its recent BrahMos tests, India on Tuesday conducted a test run of an anti-ship version of the supersonic cruise missile, the ANI news agency reported, citing sources. The missile, ANI reported, was fired from the territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as part of the tests being carried out by the Indian Navy.

“During the test conducted around 0925 hours, the DRDO-developed BrahMos supersonic cruise missile with an attack range of 300 km was launched from the Indian Navy’s INS Ranvijay and successfully reached its target ship near the Car Nicobar islands in the Bay of Bengal, ”he further cited sources as saying.

This latest test is part of a series of tests carried out by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) over the past two months. On November 24, a test firing of a ground attack version of BrahMos was conducted, also from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands territory. The missile had “successfully” reached its target, located on another island, in a test that was carried out by the Indian army.

The recent missile tests come in the context of ongoing tensions with China across the Royal Line of Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, which began in May and escalated in the following months. There have also been a number of violations of the ceasefire by Pakistan via the Line of Control (LoC) in recent days and a Pakistan Air Force (PAF) fighter jet was reportedly spotted. close to LoC on Monday.

Jointly developed by the DRDO and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya, BrahMos is the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missile. BrahMos, a missile that can be launched from submarines, ships, planes, or land, is also the fastest anti-ship cruise missile in operation. A hypersonic version, called BrahMos-II, is currently in development.

The name ‘BrahMos’ is derived from the Brahmaputra rivers of India and Moskva of Russia.
