India has successfully tested the Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM) system off the coast of Balasore in Odisha. The missile hit its target directly during the test.
The missile launch took place from ITR Chandipur at 3:50 pm off the coast of Odisha. The missile is powered by a single stage solid rocket booster engine and uses all local subsystems. The missile is canisterized for transport and launch using a mobile launcher capable of carrying 6 canisterized missiles, the Defense Ministry said in a statement.
All elements of the QRSAM weapon system such as the battery multifunction radar, the battery surveillance radar, the battery command post vehicle and the mobile launcher were implemented in the flight test. The system is capable of detecting and tracking moving targets and attacking them with short stops. The system is designed to provide air defense coverage against the attack columns of the Indian Army.
The radar tracked the Banshee target from the farthest range and the missile was launched when the target was within the kill zone and achieved direct hit with the active targeting of the terminal using the guidance of the RF Seeker. Several DRDO laboratories DRDL, RCI, LRDE, R&DE (E), IRDE, ITR have participated in the test.
The elements of the weapons system have been realized through the Defense PSUs BEL, BDL and L&T of the private industry. The missile system is completely indigenous with active RF seekers, electromechanical actuation (EMA) systems from various industries. The radar is a four wall active phase array radar. All range tracking stations, radar, EOT, and telemetry stations monitored the flight parameters.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and R&D Secretary DD and DRDO President Dr. G Satheesh Reddy congratulated DRDO scientists on the achievement.
