India on Monday successfully flight-tested the hypersonic technology demonstrator vehicle (HSTDV) developed by DRDO, which will power long-range missile systems and futuristic aerial platforms.

With the milestone, India joined the elite club of the United States, Russia, and China to successfully develop and test hypersonic technology. In congratulating the DRDO, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh called it a “historic achievement”.

“I congratulate DRDO on this historic achievement in making PM’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat a reality. I spoke with the scientists associated with the project and congratulated them on this great achievement. India is proud of them,” he tweeted.

NDTV quoted a DRDO official as saying that with the successful test flight of the HSTDV, “India has demonstrated capabilities for highly complex technology that will serve as the cornerstone for next-generation hypersonic vehicles in partnership with the national defense industry.”

Sources aware of the developments said that with this successful test, India will manufacture its first hypersonic missile in the next five years.

The DRDO statement said that the cruise vehicle was launched using a proven solid rocket motor, which took it to an altitude of 30 km, where the aerodynamic heat shields separated by a hypersonic Mach number.

The cruise vehicle separated from the launch vehicle and the air intake was opened as intended.

DRDO President Dr. G Satheesh Reddy said: “This is a technological breakthrough in the country. This test paves the way for the development of more critical hypersonic technologies, materials and vehicles. This places India in a select club. from nations that have demonstrated this technology. “
