The viral infection claimed the lives of 480 people in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths from COVID-19 to 1,19,014, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

With new COVID-19 infections, India’s total cases rose to 79,09,960 while the total number of active cases dropped to 6.53,717 after a decrease of 14,437 in the last 24 hours. The total number of cured cases is 71,37,229 with 59,105 new discharges in one day, according to data from the Ministry of Health.

The daily case count in the country has seen a sharp drop from the previous figure of more than 90,000 reported in September.

Recovery rate increases to 90%

Meanwhile, more than 70 lakh of patients have recovered from the coronavirus disease in India, bringing the recovery rate to 90 percent.

The ministry said four states account for more than half of all recovered patients and also have the maximum number of active cases.

Earlier this month, a central government-constituted committee of experts had said that India had passed the COVID-19 peak in mid-September, but warned against relaxing security measures.
