An increase of 94,372 cases in a single day has raised India’s coronavirus count to 47,54,356, data from the Union Ministry of Health showed this morning. The death count has risen to 78,586 with 1,114 more deaths in 24 hours. And 37,02,595 patients have recovered from the infection in the country. Maharashtra remains the state most affected by the pandemic, followed by three southern states: Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The country has the second highest number of cases in the world after the United States.

  1. Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh are the five states that reported the highest number of cases in the last 24 hours.

  2. The government today released a set of new protocols for patients recovering from the highly contagious disease. “Look for early warning signs such as high fever, shortness of breath, unexplained chest pain, new onset of confusion, focal weakness,” he stressed, asking patients who suffered severe symptoms to be more careful.

  3. The NEET national income and eligibility test will take place today across the country amid a surge in cases. Overall, more than 16 lakh students have registered for this exam.

  4. India’s coronavirus recoveries have seen a sharp exponential rise – from 50,000 in May to more than 36 lakhs in September, the Health Ministry said this morning, adding that more than 70,000 recoveries have been reported every day.

  5. The Serum Institute of India (SII) is set to restart coronavirus vaccine trials, pending permission from the General Medicines Controller of India (DGCI), the manufacturer said in a statement Saturday night after the UK will authorize the trials for AstraZeneca.

  6. Delhi posted its biggest single-day jump in coronavirus cases with 4,321 fresh infections in 24 hours, bringing the city’s tally to more than 2.14 lakh, government data showed on Saturday. The spike comes as the capital resumed metro services a few days ago and reopened bars on a trial basis.

  7. Maharashtra, which is hit hardest by the pandemic, reported 22,084 new cases, 13,489 discharged cases and 391 deaths on Saturday. The total number of cases in the state rose to 10,37,765, including 7,28,512 recoveries and 2,79,768 active cases, according to the Maharashtra Department of Public Health.

  8. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has warned the masses against carelessness amid the coronavirus pandemic. He, while addressing a meeting in Madhya Pradesh via video conference on Saturday, shared a tagline highlighting the importance of social distancing and masks in fighting the disease until a cure or vaccine is developed.

  9. Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan affirmed on Saturday the government’s determination to ensure that the COVID-19 patient is not denied beds and given immediate treatment. He said that the collective goal should be to have a health system available, affordable and accessible to all and the goal of the Center together with the states is to achieve a mortality rate of less than one percent.

  10. Worldwide, more than 2.8 million people have been affected by the pandemic; 9.14 lakh have died.
