Up to 43,846 more people tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative count to 1,15,99,130, the Union Health Ministry said on Sunday.
This is the highest jump in fresh infections the country has seen since late November last year. Over the past week, India has seen the steepest increase in Covid-19 cases in the past 10 months.
Maharashtra remains the largest contributor to the daily count, as the state recorded 27,126 new cases of Covid-19, the highest increase in a day since the pandemic began last year, in the past 24 hours.
The central government said on Saturday that Maharashtra, Kerala and Punjab cumulatively account for 76.22% of India’s total active cases.
In addition to this, the death toll from the disease in India has reached 1,59,755, with 197 more people losing their lives in the last 24 hours. Deaths have also seen an upward trend this month.
Up to 22,956 recovered from Covid-19 during the same duration, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,11,30,288.
As a result, active cases in the country amount to 3,09,087. India has broken the three lakh mark of active counting once again.
The number was 2,88,394 on Saturday, 2,71,282 on Friday, while it was 2,52,364 on Thursday and 2,34,406 on Wednesday. The count crossed the 2 lakh mark on March 13.
India’s Covid-19 count had crossed the 20 lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5, and 50 lakh on September 16. It went from 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20, and surpassed the one crore mark on December 19.
Vaccines in India
So far, the country has administered 4,46,03,841 anti-Covid hits.
The nationwide vaccination campaign was launched on January 16 and health workers were vaccinated and vaccination of front-line workers began on February 2.
The next phase of the Covid-19 vaccination began on March 1 for people over the age of 60 and for people aged 45 and over with specific comorbid conditions.
