India records a drop in active Covid-19 cases day by day, counts below 7 lakh for 2 days

The number of active cases of the coronavirus disease in India (Covid-19) continued below 700,000 for the second day in a row, with 80% of all new cases reported in 10 states.

Active cases now comprise just 8.71% of the country’s total positive cases, suggesting that the disease has been trending downward.

There has been a progressive drop in daily active cases for the past few weeks, with the number of active Covid-19 cases in the country from 6,80,630 as of noon on Saturday.

“The downward trend in active cases is complemented by the uninterrupted increase in recovered cases. The total number of recovered cases has crossed the 70 lakh mark and stands at 70,16,046. The national recovery rate has further improved to 89.78%, ”the Union Health Ministry said in a statement.

Professor M Vidyasagar from the Indian Institute of Technology in Hyderabad, who headed the 10-member government committee that recently made projections on Covid-19 cases and deaths in India, says in his report that the cumulative number of active cases could drop below 40,000 cases. at the end of February next year.

“From approximately 10 lakh of active cases that were reported in mid-September, the current active case burden has dropped to approximately 7 lakh, which is a 30% drop in about a month. So the numbers are decreasing. ”

“However, there is a caveat that all appropriate Covid-19 precautions, such as wearing a mask, maintaining hand hygiene, and observing physical distancing, must be observed without fail. Any form of laxity can result in a resurgence of cases, ”added Professor Vidyasagar.

The total number of Covid-19 cases in India is 78,13,542 to date.

“The continuous decrease in active cases is the result of the successful testing, treatment and monitoring strategy of the Union government that is being implemented in the states. The change in active cases in the states and territories of the Union has been varied, indicating different stages in their fight against the global pandemic, ”said a statement from the Ministry of Health on Saturday.

The number of new deaths reported in one day has also seen a sharp decline, from around 1,000 new deaths in one day about a month ago to 605 reported on Saturday. With that, the total number of people who have succumbed to Covid-19 in India so far is 1,17,946.

“The current figures seem to suggest that there is a decline in the disease graph, but as we have seen globally, this disease has experienced multiple spikes. Many countries are experiencing the second wave of the disease, and with temperatures dropping and the likelihood of people intermingling due to the holiday season, it remains to be seen how the virus behaves, ”said Dr. Vivekanand Jha, Executive Director from the George Institute for Global Health in India.

“This is a new virus and there is a great deal of uncertainty involved,” he added.
