India has one of the lowest Covid-19 deaths per million people in the world: government


India continues to have one of the lowest deaths per million inhabitants due to the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) compared to other countries in the world, the Union’s ministry of health and family welfare said on Friday.

At least 22 states and Union territories have fewer deaths per million inhabitants than the national average, which is currently set at 80, the ministry added. “Some states / UT are doing better and reporting deaths / million residents much lower than the national average,” he tweeted.

According to government data, Mizoram has not reported deaths due to the viral disease, the lowest deaths per million inhabitants were reported by Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli (3), followed by Bihar (8), Nagaland (10) and Arunachal. Pradesh (18). The highest number of deaths (per million population) in the country was recorded in Tripura (77), Uttarakhand (71), West Bengal (58) and Haryana (57).

The ministry credited the improved infrastructure with allowing promising results. “The improved medical infrastructure, the strengthened intensive care capabilities of ICU physicians, adherence to the Standard Treatment Protocol, and the tireless efforts of physicians, paramedics, and various # COVID19 warriors have collectively resulted in these results,” he said in another tweet.

As on Thursday, the number of victims of the disease stood at 111,266, which puts the fatality rate at 1.52%. The number of cases in the country has exceeded 7.3 million with 812,390 active cases, while more than 6.3 million people have recovered from the infection in home isolation or in hospitals designated by Covid-19.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan has said that a vaccine against the deadly disease is expected in a few months and that its distribution will begin in the next six months. He reiterated the need to follow social distancing protocols, wash hands regularly and wear face masks, adding that this “powerful social vaccine can stop the disease and also forms the basis of Jan Andolan against Covid-19.”
