India crosses the 10 cr mark in Covid-19 testing: ICMR | India News

NEW DELHI: India has crossed the Rs 10 crore mark in testing for Covid-19 as on Thursday with an average testing of more than Rs 10 lakhs of samples per day in the past 17 days, the Council Indian Medical Research (ICMR) said.
So far, 74,000 tests have been carried out per million inhabitants.
India has conducted the latest tests of Rs 5 million samples in just 45 days, said Lokesh Sharma, ICMR scientist and media coordinator.
Like Sept. 8, India had tested 5 crore samples for Covid-19, and in less than 50 days on Oct. 22, it reached the 10 crore mark, Sharma said.

“This has been made possible by rapidly increasing infrastructure and testing capacity across the country. The ICMR has been enhancing Covid-19 testing capacity across the country by expanding and diversifying testing capacity by leveraging the technology and facilitate innovation in affordable diagnostic kits, “said the ICMR. in a sentence.
Balram Bhargava, Director General, ICMR said: “We have responded effectively to the evolving epidemic through focused and collaborative efforts of the Center, state governments and UT.”
“The exponential increase in testing has led to the early identification, rapid isolation and effective treatment of Covid-19 cases along with effective contact tracing. This has ultimately resulted in a sustained low death rate,” he said .
“This testing milestone is testament to the fact that India has been successful in implementing the strategy of the 5T approach ‘Test, track, trace, treat and use technology efficiently, which will allow us to contain the spread of the pandemic, “he added.
The increase in testing facilities across India was at the core of the increase in testing per day, he said.
Through our ardent efforts, it has ensured that a specific test platform is available for general testing (RT-PCR), high throughput testing (COBAS), testing in the most remote locations and PHCs (TrueNAT, CBNAAT ), in containment areas (rapid antigen testing) and for large numbers and migrant population testing (pooled sample testing), Bhargava said.
The total number of diagnostic laboratories has reached 1,989. Of which, the government dedicated laboratories are 1,122 and the number of private laboratories is 867.
