Vaccines may not work on South Africa’s coronavirus strain: UK scientists

Scientists are not completely sure that COVID-19 vaccines will work on a new variant of the coronavirus found in South Africa, ITV’s political editor said on Monday, citing an unidentified scientific adviser to the British government.

British Health Secretary Matt Hancock said on Monday he was incredibly concerned about the new variant. Public Health England did not respond to phone calls seeking comment on the report.

“According to one of the government’s scientific advisers, the reason for Matt Hancock’s ‘incredible concern’ about the South African variant Covid-19 is that they are not as sure that the vaccines will be as effective against it as they are for the variant of the UK, “said ITV political editor Robert Peston.

The chairman of Bharat Biotech, whose Covaxin coronavirus vaccine has been given “restricted use in emergency situations of public interest,” attacked critics on Monday who pointed to the lack of data from the phase III trial and questioned the drug efficacy. “We don’t deserve this backlash,” said Dr. Krishna Ella.

Speaking to a virtual presser, Dr. Ella said that his company had conducted “200% honest clinical trials”, had an established track record of producing 16 safe and effective vaccines, and was transparent with all the data.

“Please do not accuse us of inexperience. We are a global company … we have manufactured 16 vaccines. It is not correct to say that we are not transparent with the data. We conduct clinical trials in many countries, including the UK. Read
