NEW DELHI: India and China are engaging in talks to resolve the border confrontation and what is happening is “something confidential” between the two parties, Minister of Foreign Affairs S Jaishankar he said Thursday.
When specifically asked about the outcome of ongoing talks during an online conclave, the foreign minister said “the discussions are continuing and it is a work in progress.”
At the same time, he said there has been a buildup of troops along the Royal Line of Control (LAC) and in many ways it is unprecedented in the recent past. India and China are locked in a military clash in eastern Ladakh for more than five months.
“Discussions are under way; what is happening is something confidential between us and the Chinese,” he said when the moderator of the Bloomberg India Economic Forum pressed the minister to give a clear state of the border situation.
“There is not much that I am in a position to say in public. I certainly do not want to prejudge him.”
Asked about the situation in Tibet as well as developments throughout LAC, Jaishankar He said, “I don’t think we should go into other issues that, frankly, have nothing to do with the current situation in Ladakh.”
He said relations between India and China improved following the signing of a series of agreements since 1993 on maintaining peace and tranquility along the border.
“For the past 30 years, we have built a relationship based on peace and quiet along the border,” he said.
Jaishankar said that if peace and tranquility is not guaranteed and the signed agreements are not honored, that is the “main cause of disruption.”
