NEW DELHI: The Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that Chinese troops resorted to “provocative actions” to change the status quo in the south bank area of Pangong lake and the Indian side took appropriate defensive measures to thwart their attempts.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Anurag Srivastava said the Chinese side violated the previously agreed understanding and engaged in “provocative military maneuvers” on the night of August 29 and August 30 in an attempt to change the status quo in the area of ​​the south bank.

“As the Indian Army said yesterday, the Indian side responded to these provocative actions and took appropriate defensive measures throughout LAC in order to safeguard our interests and defend territorial integrity,” he said in response to a query. of the media on the subject.

He said that even when the ground commanders of the two nations were in discussions to reduce the prevailing situation in LAC in Ladakh, Chinese troops on August 31 again engaged in provocative actions.
“Due to timely defensive action, the Indian side was able to prevent these attempts to unilaterally alter the status quo,” the MEA spokesman said.

He said that the actions and behavior of the Chinese side since the beginning of this year throughout LAC have been a clear violation of the bilateral agreements and protocols concluded between the two countries to guarantee peace and tranquility on the border.
“Such actions also completely ignore the understandings reached between the two Foreign Ministers and also the Special Representatives,” he said.

He added that India has addressed the matter with China through diplomatic and military channels and has urged them to discipline and control their front-line troops from taking such provocative actions.

Srivastava added that India is firmly committed to resolving all outstanding issues in the western sector through peaceful dialogue with China.
Previously, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi had said that the border between India and China has not yet been demarcated so there will always be problems and the two countries should implement consensus between their leaders to not allow differences turn into conflicts.

Last week, the Indian army had thwarted a provocative move by the Chinese army in eastern Ladakh to “unilaterally” change the status quo on the southern shore of Lake Pangong.
The army said it was the first major incident in the area after clashes in the Galwan Valley on June 15 in which 20 members of the Indian army and an undisclosed number of Chinese soldiers were killed.
