Amid ongoing discussions about the availability of Covid-19 vaccines in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday that India encourages the production of indigenous vaccines. The prime minister inaugurated the 2020 Vaishvik Bharatiya Vaigyanik Summit (VAIBHAV), a virtual summit of national and international researchers.
“In 2014, four new vaccines were introduced into our immunization program. This included a domestically developed rotavirus vaccine. Recently, we also granted marketing authorization for a pneumococcal vaccine developed in the country. We encourage the production of indigenous vaccines, ”said the prime minister.
“We broke the inertia in the system. The long hiatus in vaccine production was broken in 2014, ”said the prime minister.
“Our vaccine developers are active and competitive globally during this pandemic. Time is of the essence and we are committed to eliminating tuberculosis from India by 2025, five years before the deadline, ”added Prime Minister Modi.
