NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Modi told legislative party leaders that the blockade could take place beyond April 14 given the state of the battle against the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

Modi told political party leaders in parliament that several state governments, district administrations and experts have called for an extension of the blockade, comparing the situation to a “national and” social “emergency. The three-week closing is scheduled to end on April 14.

“I have been talking to top district ministers and collectors … the common saying is that it is not easy to lift the shutdown,” said the prime minister. “We need to be strict in the implementation of the rules of social distancing. So either by lifting or extending the lock, the general atmosphere is that it will not be possible to lift the lock immediately. ”

Narendra Modi called another meeting of all the chief ministers on April 11 for consultations, after which the Center could make a final decision on the closure.

“He (Modi) said that the government’s priority is to save each and every life,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.

Concerns about the economic impact

“He added that the country faces serious economic challenges as a result of Covid-19, and the government is committed to overcoming them,” he said.

The prime minister also told party leaders that harsh measures may be necessary in the future.

“After discussion with Prime Minister Modi, we had a feeling that the blockade will continue beyond 21 days,” said Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, leader of Congress at Lok Sabha.

More than 80% of political parties suggested extending the blockade, said Ghulam Nabi Azad, leader of Congress in Rajya Sabha.

“The prime minister said he is obtaining information from people who want the blockade to be extended, but the final decision will be made after the meeting with the CMs,” Azad said. The PMO said leaders gave the PM suggestions on “extending the blockade and a gradual exit” after it ends.

ET had reported Tuesday that the government was considering extending the blockade until the end of April, given the increase in infections. Modi said on Wednesday that the situation was changing hourly and that most countries were imposing blockades and social distancing to contain the spread.

Economic revival

Concerns about the economic impact of the blockade were also debated.

The leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (PCN), Sharad Pawar, told the prime minister during the meeting that the Covid-19 epidemic will have a global impact.

“It will be necessary to take the appropriate measures to stimulate economic growth once again, for which the central government should start planning from now on to revive the general financial system,” he told the prime minister.
