India and the US are committed to the rule of law unlike China, say US senators

Senator John Cornyn said Wednesday that the relationship between the United States and India will grow as both countries, unlike China, are committed to the rule of law that gives confidence to businesses and investors.

Speaking in a virtual interaction on the topic “United States and India: Post-Election Prospects,” US Senator Mark Warner said China follows the policy of authoritarian capitalism as it allows “fierce internal competition until the national champion emerges “And then the champion is backed by the government in the world market.

“I think what we’ve seen is that China has this model where they allow fierce domestic competition until the national champion emerges in Huawei. That national champion then gets 75 percent of the Chinese domestic market, and that translates to 20 percent of the global market. And then the Chinese government would back that national champion with, in the case of Huawei, $ 100 billion, “Warner said.

He further said: “There is no single American or Indian company that can compete with that. I think what I have seen is a growing consensus, both from the representatives of the Indian government and in particular from the Americans of Indian origin, that maybe a decade ago, India wanted to miss, not be on the side of China or the American side. . But I think, echoing what Senator Cornyn said, we are both nations operating under the rule of law. “

Reiterating the strong relations between India and the United States, Senator Cornyn said: “We have a large diaspora of Native Americans in Texas. That’s how I got involved and of course through the American Indian cameras in places like Dallas … We’ve gained a lot and also learned about the incredible potential of the improved relationship between our two countries. “

He further said that China does not follow the rules like India does. “Both the United States and India are committed to the rule of law, which gives confidence to companies and investors. For me, that is one of the greatest strengths of the relationship between the United States and India. The Anglo-Saxon jurisprudential heritage of our two countries, and respect for the rule of law and compliance with the rules, in my opinion, give greater predictability and competence to job creators and investors, and I think this is one of the reasons for which we continue to get closer and closer together ”, he added.

Another speaker in the discussion, former US Ambassador to India Richard Verma, recalled the talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President-elect Joe Biden.

“You may have seen that Prime Minister Modi had a good call with President-elect Biden. They talked about building the strategic partnership, vaccine development, Covid-19 and climate change, ”he said.

To this, Warner said: “I think both India and the United States need to rethink the supply chain. I think the United States should join some of these international efforts. I think we should be like the trillion dollar effort led by the European Union in vaccine distribution. Recent news on vaccination is very positive. But we need to have an international distribution system. “

On the defense relationship between the United States and India, Cornyn said that amid the continuing threat from China in international waters, the (QUAD) countries must support each other.

“Yesterday (Tuesday) I was talking with the Indian ambassador to the United States, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, about this. While the United States has friends like India, China does not have many friends. I think we must recognize the strength of the friendship between us as through the recent military exercises that never took place, ”he said.

He further said: “It is obvious that China will not stop to threaten the freedom of navigation and international maritime routes and endanger the trade of the economy of countries like India and the world. Therefore, we have to continue to support each other. ”
