The other two venues that have been assigned matches under BCCI’s rotation policy are Chennai, which will host the first two test matches (from February 5), and Pune, which will host the three ODI (from February 23). to March 28).
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced Thursday that Motera will be the venue for the day / night event during the opening of the Gujarat Cricket Association Indoor Academy.
The match will be India’s second pink ball test at home after Bangladesh’s game at Eden Gardens last year. “Chennai will also host the second test, while the newly built Sardar Patel Motera stadium in Ahmedabad will host the remaining two test matches,” a BCCI press release stated.
“Motera, the world’s largest cricket stadium, boasts state-of-the-art facilities and a capacity of 110,000 seats … The iconic event will be followed by the 5-match T20I series, which will also take place in Ahmedabad.” added.
The last leg of the tour will feature ODI and all three matches will take place in Pune. “The BCCI has restricted the tour to just three places taking into account the current pandemic situation prevailing in the country,” the statement read.
“Both Boards have worked closely together to put together an exciting series that promises to deliver high-octane action between two world cricket powerhouses,” added Shah.
England and Wales Cricket Board Executive Director Tom Harrison said he is looking forward to an exciting series. “We are delighted with the planning that the BCCI has carried out to ensure that the three venues in Chennai, Ahmadabad and Pune are ready to host international cricket in a biosecure environment …” he said.
“The prospect of becoming the first international team to play at the magnificent Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad adds an additional dimension to the tour and I know it will be something that will stand out for both the players and the management,” he added.
A BCCI source explained the reason why Pune and Chennai get matches. “According to our rotation policy, Pune and Chennai had to make up the matches a long time ago. With this series, they would have the opportunity to host their pending matches.
“Also after much deliberation, the BCCI operations team found that these are the three appropriate places to create a biosecure environment for two teams,” the official said.
It is understood that a successful host of the England series would pave the way for a good and successful IPL at home after it had to be brought to the UAE this year.
