India again registers more than 78,000 new cases of Covid-19, the count exceeds 3.76 million

India registered 78,357 new cases of the coronavirus disease on Wednesday, bringing the national count to 3,769,524, according to the Union Ministry of Health panel.

The number of active cases reached 8.01.282 and hospital discharges stood at 29.01.908, a gap of 21.00.626.

The death toll reached 66,333 after 1,045 people died from the disease in the past 24 hours.

Five states – Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh – have accounted for more than half of total Covid-19 cases and about 60 percent of recoveries, the ministry said Tuesday.

These five states also reported the maximum number of patients who were cured and discharged, cumulatively representing 58.04 percent of the total 65,081 people who have recovered as of Tuesday.

While the recovery rate has risen to about 77 percent, the fatality rate has dropped further to 1.77 percent, the Health Ministry said. The number of recoveries is 3.61 times the active cases of the viral infection.

According to the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), a total of 4,33,24,834 samples have been analyzed as of August 31, of which 10,16,920 were analyzed on Monday.

Three states, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, account for nearly 34 percent of the total tests, according to the government.

India’s daily testing capacity has exceeded 10 lakh and tests per million have also seen a sharp increase, reaching 31,394, the Health Ministry noted. Twenty-two states and union territories have tests per million better than the national average, he said.

The guiding principle within the Center’s “test, trace and treat” strategy has been aggressive testing by the states and territories of the union. Sustained high levels of testing lead to early diagnosis and better recovery, the Health Ministry said, adding that 1, 22, 66, 514 tests were performed in the past two weeks alone.
