- Australia leads the WTC points table despite having 68 points less than India
India led by Ajinkya Rahane turned Australia around to win the Boxing Day Test by 8 wickets and level the Border Gavaskar series 1-1 at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground on Tuesday.
India scored 30 points after MCG’s victory and is currently second to Australia in the World Test Championship points table with a 72.2 winning percentage. On the other hand, Australia was sanctioned with four ICC World Trials Championship points for maintaining a slow excessive rate against India in the second trial.
In particular, Australia (322) leads the World Test Championship points table despite having 68 points less than India, which is second in the ranking (390). New Zealand, England and Pakistan make up the top five items on the WTC point table.
Why is India in second place despite having more points than Australia?
The ICC Board had ratified the decision of its Cricket Committee to change the classification structure for the final of the World Trials Championship (WTC). Under the modified system, the WTC league ranking would be determined by the percentage of points earned by the teams.
According to the ICC, it will be determined by the percentage of points obtained in the games played. The Point Percentage (PCT) is the percentage of points earned out of the total number of points played.
Australia (322 points out of 420) is ahead of India (390 points out of 540) in the percentage of points won by them over the total number of points played. By this calculation, India has earned 72.2 percent of its points, which is less than Australia’s 76.6 percent.
After India’s resounding victory in the Boxing Day Test, the four-game series is tied 1-1. The Sydney Cricket Ground is scheduled to host the third test, starting on January 7.
