Political parties in Uttar Pradesh seem willing to incorporate Dr. Kafeel Khan into their fold, despite the fact that the doctor has only shown his ties to a few parties, but has not yet given any clear indication of his political leanings.
On Thursday, a day after his release from Mathura jail by order of the Allahabad High Court, Kafeel thanked the leader of Congress, Priyanka Gandhi, for contacting him to find out about his well-being and that of his family members.
“During difficult times, Priyanka supported me,” he said on Twitter.
After being released from prison, Kafeel, instead of going to his hometown of Gorakhpur, went to Congress-ruled Rajasthan, an indication of his ties to the party.
Former Congressional Legislature Party Leader Pradeep Mathur, who was present at the jail door when Kafeel was released, said: “On instructions from the party leaders, I was in regular contact with the district administrations of Mathura and Aligarh to complete the formalities for Kafeel’s release. I also accompanied him to the Rajasthan border. ”
When asked if Kafeel would join Congress, Mathur said: “Priyanka had raised her voice in her support for the good of humanity and to oppose the atrocities committed by the Yogi government against innocent people in Uttar Pradesh. It is Kafeel who must decide if she wants to work for Congress. ”
The doctor has already announced that he will visit Bihar, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to organize a health camp in the flood-affected areas, Mathur said.
Another congressional leader, who did not want to be named, said Kafeel has the potential to become the party’s Muslim face in the crucial 2022 UP assembly elections, for which the party is working to make up lost ground.
“He has great support among members of his community in Uttar Pradesh as well as other states,” he said.
Meanwhile, Bhim’s army chief Chandrashekhar Azad, who has launched a political party, the Azad Samaj Party (ASP), also welcomed Kafeel’s release. Chandrashekhar, who hit the state government, said the high court has vindicated Kafeel’s fight for the weakest sectors of society.
During a Facebook live show on Wednesday, Kafeel concluded his speech with ‘Jai Bhim’ and ‘Jai Mulnivasi, indicating his link with the Bhim Army which is also working to extend its base in UP. Azad has already announced that ASP will participate in the 2022 assembly elections. A Bhim army leader said that when Kafeel was in jail, Azad not only supported him but also attacked the BJP government for slapping the NSA in against him, he said.
Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav, in a tweet welcoming Kafeel’s release, said that “all justice-loving people have happily welcomed the release and hope that soon Azam Khan (Samajwadi Party MP ) also receive justice. The injustice and atrocities of those who govern do not last forever. ”
A BSP leader, who did not want to be named, said the Mayawati party chief has already called for the Dalit-Muslim-backward-Brahmin unity to defeat the BJP in the 2022 assembly elections. The party has spoken out in support of Kafeel after he was arrested following the oxygen tragedy at BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur, in which about 70 children died.
“To hide its failure, the state government was committing atrocities against Dr. Kafeel,” said the BSP leader.
